Ok, ok, so I'm a little 'gear schitzo,' so sue me ;)
(Insert 'long post warning here...)
After weighing all the options as far as mosrite copties go, it
suddenly occurred to me that I'm 6'6" with hands to match, and a
smallish Mosrite neck (or copy thereof) wasn't going to work for me.
I've made up my mind on the Jazzmaster. Given my price range, it's
going to have to be a CIJ/MIJ model.
So here's the problem(s):
1. Too many choices. Finishes, 62 vs. 66 reissues (66's are getting
harder to find, and are a little more expensive, but having played a
Gretsch exclusively for awhile, I've gotten accustomed to the block
position markers), dealers, which brings me to...
2. Dealers. Ishibashi? Has them new, but apprently only in CAR, 3
tone and white. Ikebe-Gakki? Has them new,in a virtual rainbow (but
no surf green or sherwood green - which would be ideal), has the 66's
but only in white and 3-tone. Ebay? Slim pickins these days, and hard
to tell who's full of crap and who's on the level. Gbase? The only 2
in my range have already been sold, the others are asking WAY too
much for Jap reissues. Some come with case, some with gig bag, some
neither.
3. Upgrades. After the whole deal is through, we're looking at
replacing saddles and or a buzzstop. Possible replaing guards (I have
this thing for tortoiseshell) eventually the pups...all this stuff
adds up. Will it offset the benefits of getting a brand new overseas?
I dunno. I just don't know.
So - here's where y'all come in. Help me (or make the buying process
more difficult, it's a double-edged sword). Any options I haven't
looked into (dealers, websites to check out, etc)? Anyone have one
for sale? What's cooler, candy aple red or ocean turquoise (but
doesn't everyone have a red JM?)? And, no, I can't wait and save up
for an AV model, it's not gonna happen, the GAS pains are too
intense...
Lay it on me.
And, since you've read this far, thanks.
