Hi Chad, if you already have a computer and a halfway decent sound card you
can get some pretty good results going that route. There's lots of software
out there that ranges from free to very expensive. I bought Cool Edit 2000
with the 4 track studio option...it was like $70 or so at the time. You just
have to buy a pretty good microphone (which you would have to do anyway
going the standard tape route). Or you can plug in directly fairly easily if
you just want to record guitar/bass/drum machine. I suspect live drums would
be a bit more challenging.
Going the other way, I have seen those entry level 4-tracks drop to around
$100...but have no experience with them. I too would like to hear about
those.
