Re: [SurfGuitar101] song writing process

DP (noetical1) - 02 Aug 2004 11:56:58

San:
Mine is simple:
Typically, most of my songs start as "found inspiration".
Often I will hear a sound or rythym while I'm out an about
and that inspies me to sort of recreate or reconstruct some
aspect of that sound or rythym.
Also, while jamming, we will stumble across something new
that inspires creativity.
Often, while practicing, I will discover something
interesting and new and I will use that as a nugget for a
future tune.
I play the bass and the guitar, and I compose on both
instruments. I also "goof around" on the drums and
keyboard and drum machine...often, my "goofing around"
leads to the best new ideas.
I have tried writing from a theory standpoint...coming up
with a chord or mode or scale and attempting to write form
that framework...unfortunately, this approach produces the
least amount of new stuff for me.
Often, simply setting up a new drum pattern on the drum
machine or Wurlitzer Organ is all I need to get me thinking
about new tunes.
As far a documenting my new stuff, I record ideas and
sketches to 4-track...and I also TAB or write out Nashville
Chord Notation to keep track of my stuff. I have a notebook
full of stuff, and occasionally, I will look through and
see if any of that old stuff might be useful on a current
project.
I hope some of this helps.
good luck,
dp
