Re: [SurfGuitar101] DD

g2_828 - 18 Jul 2004 15:59:53

Dick was great as usual. Too bad some yahoos in the crowd were getting more
than a little annoying when Dick and Jimmy were having technical difficulties
with their new Minaret (?) Flaming guitars and later because Dick apparently
did not realize that his sole reason for being there was to play these bozo's
favorite DD song. I thought I had left these idiot audiences when I moved back
to LA from Phoenix.
I have to admit the Dick & Jimmy portion of the show does kind of grow on
you. And the kid can play.
The best part about seeing Capt. Ron back on stage with Dick is the fact that
you can tell just by the smile on his face that there is no place in the
world that Ron would rather be than on stage with Dick.
The Neptunas opened the show and turned a great set of mostly instro tunes
with a few garage vocal numbers. These girls rock.
Big Sandy was the big attraction for me also at least until they announced DD
was going to headline after Dave Davies bowed out due to illness. Rockabilly
is too limited a term to describe Big Sandy. The best way I've found to
describe them is to say that they are Rock and Roll circa 1955 back when nobody
was
sure if rock was a new style of honky tonk country, white rhythm and blues or
the bastard child of both. Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys are all of these
and more. If you ever get a chance to see them in a club, go. It's a trip on the
"way-back machine" to a time when music was something more than
demographically defined "product." It's too bad they tore down the Palomino.
They would
have been right at home there.
I took some pics too. I can try to put them on the group site if anybody is
interested.
