A couple of days ago, I strung my SRV Strat with a set of flatwounds (Fender
12-52, stainless flats, I added a seperate unwound 3rd .022, replacing the
wound .24) instead of my usual D'addario 011 rounds. I had tried flats years
ago, but didnt like them... I'm really impressed with these however.
The setup on the guitar was WAY different however. The added tention of the
flats pulled the bridge up at least 1/4" (I usually have it flat against the
body). After fixing that (2 more springs and a couple of turns) I am pleased
to say they play nicely. Smooth as glass and not as bitey as the nickel
rounds.
They are a bit on the heavy side though - any one use any different brands
or guages on the strats and jazzmasters? Any setup tips for flats over
rounds?
I'm not sure if this is a permanent switch or not, but they definitely made
surf songs MUCH more authentic sounding and easier to play. (i.e. - Dick
Dale picking)
