Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: Bambi Molesters DVD

AARON LESKO (xtcguitar) - 14 Jul 2004 07:46:40

If REM is musically the best band youve heard, you haven't heard much. Some of
the early stuff was decent, but that's about it for them and the fact that they
are nice people but really they are appalling these days.

I'll try to explain:)
- the idea for this DVD came from our record label. We believe that
there is always a danger of being pretentious when you are
doing "story of the band" kind of documentaries and we tried to do
the best to avoid this
- first idea was to do only "touring with REM". We didn't like this
idea since this fact alone doesn't represent what this band is all
about. Then we tried to find some old footages to show that we are
really a club band which at one moment in career supported REM (and
played in front of 15000 people per show :)). If you look carefully
there is this part where we are saying that "we know this is not
reality and that we look at this REM thing as a holiday trip after
which we will go back to clubs". I believe that director of the
documentary had the same idea. Of course our record label wanted to
use DVD for marketing purposes so there you go:) Recently, I got
nice video (+ multichannel audio) of our December 2003 gig in
Zagreb. One of this days we'll make it available "for fans only"
(maybe in NTSC as well)
- as for REM I can only say that they are one of the most nicest and
down to earth people I've ever met. They watched every set we did
(they were actually on the stage all the time)and treated us too
good. Same goes for their crew. For me it was a experience of a
lifetime. Musically, they are one of the best band I've heard.
- few words about "surf music tossed aside".... of course it didn't
come from the band. We just don't think of ourselves as
a "traditional surf" band and sometimes people misinterpret it that
we don't want to be a part of surf instrumental scene or whatever is
called. Surf music is, in it's traditional form, somehow limited.
But this is true for every other genre as well. Every genre of music
needs difference in approach, sound and mixing with other genres.
Think Mermen, Hypnomen, Calexico etc.
.. just my 2 cents:)
