Actually on second glance, it looks like Dick isn't playing at the
7th like I would have expected, but closer to the middle of the fret
board. That fingering forces him to move closer to the nut a few
times. I would not have guessed he played it there, but then again
I'm not Dick Dale, and I'm not playing with the strings reversed
either...
I often pick hand positions to minimize moving up or down the
fretboard. And I often find myself avoiding open strings, prefering
to play at the 5th fret on a lower string. Don't know why, maybe
because you have more note control (you can just lift up to stop the
note rather than move your hand to mute an open string).
I've often wondered about choice of fingerings and playing
positions. I think that you just use what you came up with when you
figured out the song, or the choices you made when you originally
wrote the song. Do you songwriters on the list go back over a song
you have written to find easier/better fingerings after the fact? Do
you ever find different fingerings when you are forced to re-learn a
song you wrote a long time ago?
