Rob,
>Los Mel put a single 15" in his Twin, anyone heard it? Comments?
What truly makes a Blackface 63-67 Showman a thing of amazing beauty is the
1x15 closed, ported cabinet with metal tone ring. The cabinet, through its
design, allows a much fuller bass response, allowing the player to back off
on the bass knob, allowing more power to be redirected to the mids and
highs, giving it the effect of being a much more powerful amp than it is. To
take that same speaker and put it in an open-back configuration (as the twin
reverb combo) would be a huge sacrifice of dynamics on behalf of the
speaker. Unless thats the sound you want. In which case it's a perfect
setup.

To get the Dick sound:
"If you're not playing a Fender Stratocaster guitar with 16, 18, 18, 38, 48,
and 58/60 thousandths-gauge strings, and projected out of a vintage Fender
Dual Showman amp head and the Dick Dale 4-ohm 100-watt output transformer
blowing through twin vintage 15-inch JBL-D130F speakers placed in a
three-foot tall, two-foot wide, one-foot deep cabinet packed full of
fiberglass with no portholes, you can't duplicate the true, original "Dick
Dale surf sound"."
This is an excerpt from a great site which I believe was set up by
Cowabunga's own Albatross over in Belgium. Check it out...
I would love to get my hands on one of those "Dick Dale 4-ohm 100-watt
output transformers". In stock config those were all 8 ohm transformers.
That would explain why my ears ring for two days after a Dick show.

Gein of Gein and The Graverobbers is playing through a vintage twin with
outboard reverb and getting great results these days. Contact him.
