The two I've found to be worthwhile are "Surf Guitar" by Roy
Zimmerman and "Where are They Now? Surf and Spy Guitar," a Warner
Brothers publication.
The problems with the first are that it uses arrangements not done by
the original artists for some songs--hope you like the Beach Boys'
version of "Misirlou" or the Ventures cover of "Tall Cool One." Also,
there's two Ricky Nelson tunes and Del Shannon's "Runaway"--not
exactly surf. Other than that, it's pretty solid.
The second one's a bit thin, in terms of content. Five of the
seventeen songs are Duane Eddy's. The tabs for "Peter Gunn"
and "Tequila" cut out the sax solos, while the tab for "Tequila" in
the other book is for the whole song. It's too bad, because otherwise
it seems to have had more time spent on the arranging.
Slightly amusing side note--of the most commonly covered instro
tunes, neither book has "Pipeline" or "Squad Car," among others.
