"I'm curious, why wouldn't the other band play "Journey To The Stars"
live?"

Hi,
Although not from Chicago but from Belgium, we do play "Journey to the
stars" live.
But it's one tune that I always almost wet my pants with. This song has
such a precise timing on it, that it's a real effort to do it right.
From the 8 times we played it live, it went almost to disaster about 5
times, wrong timing, too fast, too slow...etc...
We did it in a three piece and four piece band setting (I must say it's
a bit easier when performed by four)
We also still have a problem with getting the bass part right. And I
must admit we sometimes leave out some of the "original Ventures"
extra's. But it's a song I really like a lot. So we keep playing it.
But if anyone can help me out with the bass part, I would be gratefull.

Also most covers have a different bass line then the original. For
example, listen to "The Nebulas" version of "Journey to the Stars" on
the live at KFJC CD. And there is also a very tight version of "Journey
to the Stars" by "The Revelairs", who also use a different bass line.
We also sneak in a MAOM cover from time to time while playing live.
