To answer your question, heck yes! The outboard reverb units have 3 knobs
and a more sophisticated reverb circuit than the built in reverb on *most*
Fender amps. The Fender Custom Shop amps "Vibro King" and "Dual
Professional" are the notable exceptions. They have essentially an outboard
unit built right into them.
The outboard units allow you to get the totally over the top, drown you,
splish-splashy reverb that you can hear on many surf records. Its an order
of magnitude difference.
