Your understanding is probably pretty much close to the way the use
of the iron cross as a surfer/hot rod symbol evolved. Check out the

I'd guess that people picked up on it in the late '50's or
early '60's because they thought it looked "cool", without giving
any thought to any of the meaning the symbol has had over the
years. I think that a lot of things creep into popular culture like
that - based upon appearance and not much else.
I dunno, just a guess . . .
