Vintage Amp Advice Please!

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 12 Jan 2004 22:57:31

Okay, y'all know I am obsessed with cheap old Premier amps.
Well, I just bought the Holy Grail of Premiers, a 1955 Model 71
with a single 12" and two 3" treble speakers. Same amp Link
Wray used to record "Rumble." " Yoo Hoo! And, best of all, it
looks to be entirely original and in excellent cosmetic shape.
Which leads to my dilemma: it has sat for 20 years, and I am
sure some of the caps and resistors are shot. Ditto a tube or
two. I plan to re-tube, as I have all the replacements, and then
save the old originals. But should I recap and replace resistors?
And how does one test them? I usually work with an amp tech,
but am pretty handy and want to get more hands-on.
Any advice? Can someone point me to a vintage amp restoration
site? And will changing these parts suck value from this ol' box?
Maybe I am crazy, but when I see "all original tubes & etc." I think
the amp has either never been serviced or never used and is
long overdue!
Please advise before I go and do something wrong!
P.S. My band and playing are coming along fine.
