Hi,
Since I usually take the neck off, I have to put the guitar back
together.
So once that is done (approx 5-10 minutes) I start to put the sting on,
but usally don't tune at that point.
I just give some tension to each string and tune after 30 minutes.
Sometimes I tune even after the neck and strings are set back on.
Since the tuss rod works like a screw with bolt, the wood can't go
anywhere. So I guess no harm can be done there.
I did this to most of my guitars once or more (depending on whith type
of stings I use and which action I prefer) and I never had a problem
with any of those (Some where real cheap guitars like strat copies, Aria
Diamonds, etc...)
When I take the neck off, I do this by loosenening the four screws a bit
first, then take them out one by one, slowly.
I usually work "crosslike" so one comes out, then the oposite screw (as
in an X)
If you don't feel comfortable with this, take you guitar to a tech and
ask him to adjust the tuss rod when you watch. (the guitar tech of my
local instrument store is a nice guy and he learned me some tricks and
techniques) So I now do most of the work myself, it's cheaper and more
satisfying. (and to think this all started with a faulty factory set
Jazzmaster bridge, most techs are not too familiar with the Fender
Floating trem design or the "rockin bridge")
Kind regards,
Jerry S.

How long should you let the neck "settle" after an adjustment?
