I am not an expert. But I am doing the same decision
right now. I am looking at the SD SSL-1. I already
have one in the middle position, and since I decided
for the Pyramid Gold 011 flatwound set for the strat,
this sounds best, as it is staggered to the vintage
specs. For different string sets equal level polepices
are better.
I had a SD vintage Jaguar pu in the bridge position,
since I had it lying around, and it was better
sounding than the one the guitar came with. But with
Pyramid Gold strings there was considerable low level
on the D and G strings, while the B string was way to
loud, since the SD Jaguar is not staggered. I think
Duncan should make a staggered version!
I like a little hotter output than 57/62 strat pus. I
think the Jag PUs are great, and around 1964 Fender
changed the Strat PUs to a similar average
resisitance, the bridge PU has been the hottest
commonly anyway. What I read on the web was that the
SSl-1s are hotter than 57/62 PUs.
I will stay with alnico V magnets in any case. I put
metal baseplates under the neck and bridge pick ups,
which ads punch and a little more broadness to the
sound, according to Lindy Fralin who is offering these
plates. So hopefully the guitar will resemble a little
bit of Jazzmaster characteristics for the respective
pick-up selections.
