The guitar you saw is actually called a "Jagmaster."
The newer ones with the really ugly silver sparkle
finish are made in China. They don't really sound
anything like a Jazzmaster, but if you want a guitar
to mod, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Just look around
for one as cheap as possible and chop it up to your
liking. You might want to figure in the cost of the
p'ups, etc, because by the time you do all that it
might be more prudent just to shop around for an MIJ
Jazzmaster and add a p'up.
There is an older line of Japanese Jagmasters that
were part of the discontinued Squier Vista series.
These actually had reissue Jag/JM parts; a 24" Jag
neck and a JM body. Much nicer quality and finishes.
These are rarer and more expensive, but if you really
want a Jaguar/Jazzmaster vibe, you might want to shop
for one.
