My two passions (music-wise) have always been 50s/oldies rock and roll
(it's what I grew up listening to, 'cause that what my parents were into), and
electronic music (everything from Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, JM Jarre, and
Synergy to The Orb, FSOL, and Banco de Gaia). I have actually created
a weird hybrid of surf/rockabilly with electronic/Gothic, which I call
Gothabilly (although my music has FAR more synths than some other
"Gothabilly" bands).
One local dj described it as "Duane Eddy meeting Gary Numan in a
dark alley," which ain't far from the truth.
I never got into the 60s Farfisa or Hammond organ sounds. Now, I
LOVE the Bomboras, and for the most part, Jake's organ sounds pretty
good, but sometimes it can be overdone. I personally like to create
something unique, and I certainly don't know of too many bands out
there that have fused rockabilly/surf with electronic music. Actually,
DEVO did a surf album (recorded under another name, but it was still
DEVO) which had tons of synths in it.
I'll tell you what has been a HUGE influence on my music: Angelo
Badalamenti, particularly the Twin Peaks soundtrack. I recall a thread
a few months ago about the guy who played guitar on that soundtrack.
In fact, the name of my band (well, it's just me right now) is The Bookhouse
Boys, which comes from Twin Peaks, and the song by that name on the
Twin Peaks soundtrack has this really eerie Duane Eddy-sounding guitar part in
it.
I'm rambling--gotta get back to work.
By-the-way, thanks to all for the response to my inane questions--this list is,
by far, the most professional I'm on, and I'm glad to see the exchange of
pragmatic information without resorting to the bashing that is so prevalent on
other lists.
