Jeff-
It's funny you should mention about the shared pool of talent in LA bands-- I
always had a little chuckle- How many surf bands are there in LA: One. I see
things different now, and playing with other bands has been great.
So let me add a little more to my statement about how you can never be in too
many bands. I played with only one band for almost 10 years, as the leader and
songwriter. I felt my playing and writing was stagnating, just repeating the
same stuff. So I wanted to play with other people to broaden my horizons. After
Mel left the Alvarados, we decided to get the Mach IV together based on our
mutual love for trad surf. Then the Aqua-Velvets called when Hank left the band.
Then the Insect Surfers called when they needed a bass player for a NorCal tour.
Then Mel started the Meshugga Beach Party. All of these bands have allowed me to
work with brilliant songwriters, guitar players, rhythm sections and different
styles. With M4s and AVs I am mostly the rhythm dude so I have had to put a lot
more effort into my right hand technique, especially on the Shadows and Ventures
style songs. I really never had any cause in my life to work on that. Miles is a
fantasticly well versed player yet subtle, it is amazing to watch him. Mel has
taught me so much about economy. David Arnson taught me how to pogo out of tempo
with the beat.
I know there are a lot of aspiring players on this list, and I have to say that
even after playing in bands for 25 years there is so much to learn.

PS: The song I recorded with Sam and Dusty is called "Eskimo Pie". Dusty said he
may want to write and sing lyrics for it- we'll see. wrote:
