Yes! I attended the Forest of Red Stratocasters conference. :) Heard twangy
stuff from about 3pm til 11:30pm, including a couple of Shadows who hadn't
played together in 40 years!
Very nice stage with oodles of Vox amps, clever lighting, mirror ball, smoke
machines, AND wall o' video! Very nice presentation! Got to meet Ivan, say
hi and chat a bit. Very little time without music. The whole thing was very
well done. I suppose that this is what I should expect from a club as
opposed to a promoter. In fact, most of the players (til 7:30) were club
members and some of them were pretty good. The post-7:30 group of 3 bands,
The Troubadors, The New Fentones and the Shadows members with drummer and
lead guitar were all excellent and had fine sets that were well received.
I happened to be seated at a table that included some players who asked me
to take their picture. I took about 6 shots of them onstage and with Bruce
Welch. One of them will probably sub this list before long.
The club actually has an open stage regularly and I expect I'll become a
regular at these events. What's more, I can recommend this (these) events to
anyone in the greater Toronto area who has a love of twangy guitar
instrumentals. This particular event was special because of the presence of
2 Shadows. Bruce in particular told some very interesting stories about the
old days.
Heard 2 new tunes that I really liked too. Man of Mystery and The Golden
Sea. Also heard The Cruel Sea, which I know from the Challengers but it was
said to be sourced from the Dakotas, who backed up Billy J. Kramer. Well,
who knew? Not I.
