In case you're wondering who Bruce Welch is: the rhythm guitarist of
the Shadows; primary songwriter for the band, as well as for Cliff
Richard (when Cliff was still rock'n'roll). This is the man that
Sting saw riding around Newcastle (home of both of them) in a Rolls
Royce in the sixties (so when Sting was still quite young) and told
himself that if Bruce could be a rock star, so could Sting! This is
also the man who around '63 threw a party attended by the biggest
stars of the day, including the Beatles, and where the Beatles and
the Shadows spent a part of the evening mocking each other in front
of all the guests (of course, in good fun) exaggerating the other's
signature characteristics. This is also the man whose vacation house
in Portugal rock stars used to borrow to get some privacy; among them
was Paul McCartney who apparently wrote Yesterday while staying
there. Just a few anecdotes for you.
