One of my local shops has a '64 Reverb unit so I went to go check it
out and compare it to my '63 RI which I brought along. I was fully
planning on buying the thing if it was everything I thought it would
be but then immediately after playing through it, something seemed
wierd. First of all, the reverb wasn't nearly as wet sounding as my
re-issue. Hmm. Then I noticed something that also seemed odd - when I
cranked up the Dwell knob on the '64, the signal got much much hotter
and all of a sudden the guitar sound was really loud. Click off the
tank and it's all quiet again. Hmm #2 (and big bummer - it was a
good price and decent shape). My RI doesn't do that when I crank up
the dwell knob...it just has more verb. I thought this seemed
wierd. Needless to say I didn't buy it. The guys at the shop said
they would have the tech check it out. For those of you with an
original unit, does yours get much louder when you crank up the dwell
knob?? This was the first original I had tinkered with (other than my
early 60's Gibson reverb tank heh) so I'd love to know if this is
considered "normal", though I highly doubt it.
Oh yeah, they also had a 1970 Fender tube reverb tank. That thing
was way too mellow sounding. It didn't sound wet at all, but cranking
up the dwell did produce more reverb, not volume...
