I believe that the seller, Retro Amps, is one of the authorized Hoffman
board kit manufacturers. Check out the Hoffman Amps site
(www.hoffmanamps.com) or the Retro Amps site (www.retroamps.com) for more
details - these look like real quality kits. The BIN price is the close to
the street price for these kits, but the ebay deal appears to be assembled -
nice deal. Don't know if the sound improves or not from these things - I
would imagine the tonal improvement would come more from the use of higher
quality components than from the point-to-point wiring.
Actually, I'm sort of counting on this type of "upgrade" to sound better . .
. I *just* got one of the reverb unit "kits" from STF Electronics, complete
with a nice black tolex cab (cabinet sold separately). I have been
seriously contemplating one of these board upgrade kits for a while, and
almost bought one of the Hoffman board kits. Then I figured, "what the
heck, I'll get the board kit and instead of popping it into my RI tank, I'll
build a new tank . . ." - then I remembered one of the discussions here
where someone mentioned the STF Electronics "kit", which includes a chassis,
the tranny, tubes, the tank, and just about everything else you need (except
for the cabinet and some connection wires to the tank). Just got home from
a business trip today and had two large packages waiting for me - I'll
report on these in more detail in a later post (if you are intimidated by
ziplock bags filled with electrical components, don't go this route!).
Should be fun!
