Re: [SurfGuitar101] The Halibuts -- Halibut Rick???

Halibut Rick (halibutrick) - 17 Apr 2003 10:06:08

Yup, I'm a Halibut. One of the founding members (started sometime
around 1980). 20+ years, this could get long! Here's a really condensed
history.
From '82 to now, we've had the same lineup except for a few different
bass players.
Pete Curry (guitar)
Joe Lyou (sax)
Randy Haskin (drums)
Dave Sherman (bass) (he's also lead guitar of Hillbilly Soul Surfers)
Bruce Paddy (keyboards)
me (guitar)
We did 5 albums from 82-96:
Halibut Beach (What?/Iloki)
Gnarly! (What?/Iloki)
Live At Toes (our own release)
Chumming (Upstart)
Life On The Bottom. (Upstart)
You may still be able to find Chumming and Life On the Bottom. I think
they may still be in the Rounder catalog. There was talk of
re-releasing Live At Toes with some bonus tracks, and it was remastered
for CD, but the project kind of fizzled.
In '98 I moved from LA to San Diego and about that time Pete joined
Los Straitjackets. He's the Eddie Angel connection, not me. We
continued to play steady for about another year until pretty much Pete
was always on the road with LS. We didn't play at all last year. Lucky
for me, Mike Palm (Agent Orange) moved down to SD just before I did.
Mike had filled in on bass with the Halibuts for about a year and I had
filled in on guitar with his side band the Deoras a few times. So when
he said he wanted to start the Deoras back up, I signed on.
The Halibuts were hoping to do a few shows this spring, but Pete got a
little busy with LS. We haven't called it quits yet.
