You spelled my name fine, now try to pronounce it...
The Reverend has been my main guitar since I bought it in 1997, I have played
more than 125 shows
with it a recorded 2 Pollo CDs. Great guitar.
I have always been a fan of the Silvertone concept- the lipstick pickups and the
clapboard body, but
most of the originals that I played had crummy necks and workmanship. Joe Naylor
was a guy known for
his expertice with speaker and amp construction and repair. I read that he was
going to build
guitars, and he was updating the Silvertone concept, so I contacted him and we
started talking about
guitars. I thought it was great to talk to the owner of the company-- imagine
talking with Leo
Fender about the kind of guitar you would want. So, I told Joe what I wanted-
extra large neck,
turquoise body, vibrato and I bought it sight unseen. Needless to say I was
thrilled when I got the
guitar!
I don't think the Reverend is a guitar for everybody. I have always tried to
find my own voice for
guitar tone rather than just follow the Jazzmater/Fender Amp route (not that
this setup isn't
perfectly acceptable- that is what I play with The Mach IV). I have 4 other
guitars with Lipstick
pickups- A 60's silvertone, a '94 Ibanez Talman and my bastard copy Strat (which
is guitar #2) and a
Jerry Jones Silvertone copy. There is a lot of talk here about high-output
pickups, but I prefer the
low output Lipsticks-- they make the amp work harder and you get more overdrive
at a lower volume.
Last year I bought a Yamaha SGV 800 on Ebay ($325 new WOW!!!). I really like it
but it has a bad
problem- a slightly twisted neck, not much you can do about that except take
the guitar to a
chiropractor. Its still quite playable and guitar fans always ask about it when
I play it. Though it
has single coil pickups, I don't think it is a very good surf guitar. Great
vibrato once it was set
up properly, though the springs have difficulty offsetting the 11s I use.
