Re: Deciding b/t HRDeluxe and Twin Reverb

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 26 Mar 2003 22:02:36

Thanks for the input on SD Vintage pups for Jag...now, allow me to
return the favor.
I bought a used HRD and promptly replaced the lousy Eminence speaker
with a Weber California 12, tbe speaker Ted Weber recommended as best
for clean surf sound. I also retubed the preamp stage with new Ei
tubes, a decent copy of the old Telefunken silver plate tubes. Much
chimier and harmonic than the original Groove Tubes. Then, I hooked up
a 10w Ibanez solid-state acoustic amp to emphasize the subtle highs
that you can't get with a normal big-speaker single combo. Weird, but
a fantastic sound!
Sans any changes, the HRD is loud and has lots of features. I
especially like the effects loop, and the reverb ain't bad. However, I
use a outboard Fender RI reverb tank, so hardly use the combo reverb.
I recently a/b'd my modified amp next to a reissue Twin Reverb, a
reissue Vibro King, and a Deluxe Reverb Reissue. Oddly, one DRRI
sounded great - real deep tone, a great reverb sound. The other sucked
- flat and not as nuanced and "tube toned." In any case, the reissues
all sounded somewhat more authentic to the old Fender tube amp sound.
If I could do it again, I would have gladly spend the extra dough on
the Twin Reverb.
That said, if you are interested in an HRD with a nice Weber speaker
and Ei tubes... ;-)
Good luck in your quest for the tonal Holy Grail.
