I think, like all in-group youth idioms, surfer lingo changes with the season
and age of the
participants. I recall ''Betty,' and "Barney" and especially "Bozo" from the
1970s; "gremmie"
seems to have morphed into "grom," "val" was common, too, when I lived in
LaJolla circa
1978. "Kook" never seems to go out of fashion, tho.
But I never heard Hodad, Hodaddy, or Land Shark. "Poser" was common, and still
is today.
We used to call good things "tubular," another by-gone word.
I always loved surfer language, it is typically playful and goofy. But it feels
weird dipping
back into the 60s and dredging up the old terminology, like saying "Hepcat" or
"Daddio"
among jazz players.
However, if y'all want to be Barneys and use these words, I say, "rad, Hodad!"
