New Here

acehaze06 - 21 Feb 2006 03:05:44

Hi,
I'm new here, just found the main site the other day. Wanted to say
thanks for the mp3 compilation, it kicks ass. I'm fairly new to
learning surf guitar/rock. Just started trying to learn some covers
(just learned Surf Rider), though I've always loved the sound. I've
been playing guitar for 13 years, self taught (which means I lack
theory/proper technique, but make up for it with pure energy and
improvisation. Not the best not the worst) Anyway, my roots go back to
metal, it's where I started, and my playing will always have a metal
element to it, like I said it's my roots.
Back when I was 18 and playing metal I worked for a chevy dealership
as a lot porter, cleaning cars, details, gas ups, dealer trades (Got
to drive new Corvettes everyday, <g>), anyway, my boss at the
dealership was Pat Connelly of the Surfaris, no lie. At the time I had
no idea who the Surfaris were. One day I told him I play guitar, and
he told me who he was, I was like "who?" and he said "ever heard the
song Wipeout?" I said "yeah, of course", and he say's "I wrote the
guitar part" I was impressed even then, but only now can I realize the
magnitude of that. He said he didn't play music anymore, and told me
he disliked metal. So, I never asked him for lessons or anything. Man,
today I wish I pushed him harder for lessons, he was a hard man, but a
fair boss, and he seemed to like me, though he tried not to show it.
I remember every morning at the lot I would have to put out the keys
in all the lock boxes on over 400 cars (also had to retrive the keys
in reverse order at closing), even if it was raining outside. On these
rainy days after I put out the keys Pat would let me sit in the office
and just shoot the shit with him. He bought me lunch a few times even.
And every Sunday we would watch football in the office together, have
cook outs and drink beer. Cool job, but very hard work, 12 hour days
sun up to sun down. I ended up moving about an hour away and have
since lost touch with Pat. This was many years ago. Now that I'm into
surf guitar, I might just try and track him down again, though I think
he has retired from the car business.
I've learned alot about Surf music in the past few days but I have
many questions regarding surf guitar, which I won't bombard you all
with at once. But, for my first question, I was planning on picking up
the book Surf Guitar by Roy Zimmerman to start out with and was
wondering what you guys thought of the book, and any others you might
suggest?
