Constructive criticism, anyone???

Irwin Fletcher (mournblade1066) - 12 Feb 2006 15:20:53

Hey all!
I just downloaded an mp3 of a demo of mine into the
files section--I hope that is alright. If not, let me
know, and I'll delete it.
Anyhoo, I was hoping that some of you might take a
listen to it, and tell me what you think--be honest!
It's a mix of two tunes: "Surfin' Slaughter" (which is
my own composition) and "Surf Bat," which was originally
done by 45 Grave. The name of my "band" (it's just me,
actually) is The Bookhouse Boys. (Any David Lynch fans
out there?)
Everything was recorded in my rec room with the following
equipment:
Fender Squire Strat
Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler
Ensoniq FIZMO synthesizer
BOSS DR-550 drum machine
DigiTech DigiVerb pedal
Unknown-brand bass guitar I bought for 20 bucks 14 years ago
when I was in college (it's only used during the first minute
of this track--all other bass parts are actually my guitar
electronically tuned down an octave)
All recorded on PG Music PowerTracks Pro Audio.
Keep in mind--before you laugh TOO hard--I'm primarily a
keyboard player, and have only been playing the guitar
"seriously" for about two years. But I got so damn sick
and tired of trying to look for someone to start a "retro-
style" band with in this area (central PA), that I finally
decided to learn how to do it myself. (Almost every guitar player
in this area seems to have been weened on Bad Company, and
thinks that Lynyrd Skynyrd cover tunes are the apex of
"good" rock 'n' roll.)
Also keep in mind that this recorded in my own home, on my
PC, on recording software that set me back a whopping $40 or
so, and an entry-level Fender gee-tar. Oh, and no amplifier.
And a spring reverb emulatro pedal.
In other words, I'm a surf-instrumentalist-wanna-be, I admit. ;-)
But where I get a bit deviant is here: I'm adding electronic
sounds to "traditional" surf music. The track I downloaded only
has a little bit of synthesizer, but one of my other tracks, which
is a cross between "Bombora!" and my own stuff I call "Death at
Mavericks," features synths a lot more prominently.
Whatever.
Again, let me know what you think.
Vince
