Re: Let's not get into a flame war, please - how about something more constructi

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 12 Feb 2006 13:17:07

Thanks for heading off a possible flame war...I was fishing for words
along similiar lines, but you beat me to it!
No on to your other comments:

Well I love both old and new surf music, and I do buy a lot of stuff.
I think it is important to buy CD's and talk about bands that are
good. This is a main objective of this list. I do believe there are
great bands making good surf music today.
I think Sean and Double Crown do a great job of keeping standards
high. I don't buy everything he puts out, some of it is too lo-fi for
me, but clearly there are major home runs with stuff like The
Penetrators, The Apemen, The Nebulas, The Madeira, etc. I will
continue to support Double Crown, that's for sure.
There are other labels, promoters, and organizations that publish
sub-par stuff in
massive quantities, all the while touting it as masterworks in the
genre, and I never understood that. However I can see
where not everyone shares my taste, so I will leave it at that.
I also agree with Tony that the primary mission of surf is fun. If I
ever get my act together and play in a surf band, I will not be
capable of foundation moving, genre defining moments like The Madiera,
The Volcanos, Slacktone, Satan's Pilgrims, Jon & The Nightriders, The
Nebulas, and all the other greats I admire; it will just be for fun.
Because I love it. I love to listen to it, I love to play it. There is
a place for those types of bands too (but I will not pretend I am
anything I am not).
I kind of got off track, but let me say again, there is good new surf
out there; we are better off for it, and I will support labels like
Double Crown. Sure, I'm a hardcore surf fan, but thats where the cards
lie. I will continue to do my best to try to attract new fans with my
website, this list, and word of mouth to my friends.
