RE: [SurfGuitar101] Re: New from NAMM: Fender '64 Vibroverb Custom

Mel Waldorf (melwaldorf) - 16 Jan 2003 18:59:25

Ah yes. And, in fact, I believe I have played surf guitar myself through
that very Vibroverb. I've even personally build a "Vibroclone" using a '75
Bandmaster Reverb in a 1x15" cabinet. It's a great amp; Stan-o from the old
Mel-tones still has it.
I suppose I should have prefaced my comments to be specifically about the
new "custom" Vibroverb. My comments are also mainly aimed at the Diaz mod,
to get the SRV "blooz" tone. The solid state/tube rectifier switch is a
nice touch, and will give the amp more clean headroom than a vintage
Vibroverb.
However, as a surf amp, I would prefer the late 90s Vibrosonic - 85W with a
15" speaker. Of course, the new Vibroverb has higher quality construction,
with PTP wiring and a pine cabinet.
I'm not saying you can't play surf on a 40W amp, just that surf players, and
anyone else striving for loud, clean tones, are not the primary target for
this amp.
I'm glad that Fender is building this amp; it's an exciting update of a
classic design. Of course, I'd love to see Fender build a brownface Showman
"Custom" with three tube harmonic vibrato, channel switching, 2/4 power tube
selector, and a 1x15" tone-ring cabinet.

Custom
I bought a Vibroverb (to play Surf on, Mel) in '92-- I can't
believe the pice is at $200 now. I think my amp cost under
$500 when I bought it.
