What I do a lot is I take this program Impulse Tracker
and track the drums. I'll also use piano, trumpet,
saxaphone, etc. samples to track background parts to
my songs.
I've done that with pretty much all these songs:
Coated In Oil is a good example of what I mean.
The program isn't very user friendly, but it's free
and gets the job done.
