Obscure Instro Musica

Kim Sweeney (swamikim) - 02 Nov 2005 20:50:40

Aloha Y'all,
These are a few of my old faves, After the first wave of SURF was
Over, you had to look far and wide to get a good instro...
Tunis Obscuro Maximus
"Whittier Blvd." - Thee Midnighters
Required cruising music back in the day.
(we always play this tune, an extended version,
so I can introduce the guys in the band, and we
each take a little solo, too.)
"2120 South Michigan Avenue" - The Rolling Stones
a very similar tune, another song named after a street,
in this case, a Chicago Recording Studio (Stax/Volt?)
"Only the Young" - The Champs
This tune popped into my head after 43 years or so,
This was always in my stack of 45's I did not remember
That it was the Champs, 'til I found it on the internet!
Da da daaa ta da da da-da-da .....Tequila!
These are a few tunes from the hippie era,
Thank goodness some bands still played some instros!
"Emotions" - Love
The only instro on the album. This was used in an
Obscure movie, too, "Medium Cool"
"Gold and Silver" Quicksilver Messenger Service
You could start this song in El Lay and it would be just
Over when you rolled into San Fran.
"Pali Gap" - Jimi Hendrix
a Jimi Instro definitely influenced by his visit to Hawaii
"Fiberglass Jungle" - The Crossfires
"Stringer" and "The Chase" - Bobby Fuller
found these on the "Shakedown! Texas Tapes Revisited" CD
The first "Arena Rock Show" I ever attended was in the Rose Bowl in 1965
Definitely the end of the Surf Band era. Got to see a few of these
Obscure tunes played for the last time.
Top billing was Herman and the Hermits
The Turtles (their debut, formerly The Crossfires)
Thee Midnighters
The Bobby Fuller Four
The Lovin' Spoonfuls
...still, a fabulous Fender Fest
Laterz, Kim
