Hi all,
I just joined this list and want to introduce myself. I'm a 39 year old
professional artist/musician from Alabama. Began playing guitar at age 12 and
was turned on to Surf soon after that by a friend's mom who had a huge
collection of Ventures albums.
I played in rock bands in my teens, played the blues professionally
throughout my late 20s/early 30s, and have been into mostly bluegrass/acoustic
music
for the past few years. I now build and play cigar box guitars (both acoustic
and electric), and a variety of other instruments, and host an annual Cigar
Box Guitar Festival in Huntsville, Alabama.
Lately I've been listening to a lot of surf music again and am starting to
think about forming a surf band. There are a couple of local surf bands around
now and they seem to be developing a following.
As far as my arsenal goes, besides my oddball homemade instruments, I have a
couple of 62' reissue Strats (both 1980s vintage MIJ), an identical pair of
mid-60s Silvertone Hollowbodies with Bigsbys, a pristine mid-60s Teisco Del
Ray, a 50s/60s Magnatone lap steel, and a 1959 Hammond M3 organ. For
amplification I have a Line 6, which is great for home recording, but am looking
for a
good vintage Fender amp to use live. I also have a Korg X5 I use for
sequencing/recording.
I joined this list to hopefully broaden my spectrum of what's going on in
SURF music today on a national level. I'm aware of newer stuff like Los
Straitjackets, but not much beyond that.
