Regarding Dexter and the Flat Duo Jets...
Dexter and Crow had a deal with a big label for a while, back
around '97 or '98, but then everything fell apart after one album --
the deal and the band both collapsed. I understand that Crow refuses
even to speak with Dexter since. I could be way off base here, but
my hunch/impression is that Crow thought they'd finally hit the
bigtime, and Dex somehow blew it for them. (When I interviewed them
both right before the problem developed, Crow was ecstatic about the
money and tour support they were finally getting, but pretty much
all Dex wanted to talk about was his hallucinations of flying
sharks.)
Dex has had several different backing bands since then, sometimes
with more than one musician (even a full band with horns at least
once), but typically he performs with just a drummer (not Crow,
though, of course) and a "dancer." The "dancer" is a whole 'nother
story -- a grotesque man with a Buddah-shaped body who hops around
the stage wearing nothing but a ballcap and a daiper. His oversized
diaper is often artfully stained with globs of Hershey's chocolate
syrup. (I once saw him applying it to his "costume" in the restroom
at the Starlight Six, so I KNOW it's really chocolate.)
When Dex and the dancer performed at Drive-Invasion last year
(supporting Davie Allan & The Arrows), several people -- including
John from Daddy-a-Go-Go -- were so revolted by this display that
they've never been back.
