Re: [SurfGuitar101] jag shopping/ventures jazz

bruce duncan (wetreverb) - 12 Sep 2005 13:24:05

Oh Carol,
Great News! I'm so glad that your Ventures Jazzmaster got there without
incident! Now you can see why I like this limited edition so much! The tone
and sustain beat 99% of the other factory stock Jazzmasters I've ever played,
(and that's several dozen by now). I think it has to do with the combination of
the LIght Swamp Ash body and the Seymour Duncan Jazzmaster R/I pickups that were
specified by Don Wilson of The Ventures. And, the cosmetics are something
special - No other Jazzmaster like it!
I changed the strings and put on a set of .011 D'Addario NIckels, and with those
strings on the guitar, everyone else in my band flipped when they heard the
sound of this guitar. Bear in mind, adjusting the truss is a B----CH because
with the flying-deck fretboard, there's no way to get at the truss adjusting
screw without virtually removing the neck from the guitar, which means the
strings must be loosened to do it.
I think DP's advice to consider having a guitar tech do this, is right on the
money. If you have a local music dealer with a good guitar tech, go there, buy
the strings you want to put on the guitar, and leave it for the tech to do the
following, (all of which are recommended on changing string guage) 1. Adjust
Truss in Neck; 2. Adjust intontation; 3. Adjust bridge saddle height; 2.
Make sure nut is grooved to accept the thicker guage strings. All in all,
depending on the store and the tech, you can expect to spend $35-$60 plus the
strings. It may seem like a lot, but on this guitar in particular, I'd say it's
money well-spent.
Enjoy that black-burst beauty!

i want to thank the many people who emailed me with their opinions and
suggestions, especially the two who told me about a ventures
jazzmaster on ebay.......well, i bought it and have thought it lost in
shipping since it was coming from the UK and i was told i would have
it last week, no later than wednesday. so i was bummed when it didn't
show by friday.......but! it's here and as advertised in almost mint
condition. only a few pick scratchs. but, i'm at work so i haven't
even gotten to plug it in :( ......it has very light strings
and since i want to put heavier on it am i going to have to adjust the
truss rod? i don't want to mess anything up............bruce, you were
right, the pictures don't do it justice carol
