Thanks, Wannes,
I'm 39, so I think that put's me in the 80's, and yes I was a Cure
fan, but much more a DK's/Gang of Four/Buzzcocks/Clash/Powerpop fan.
But later on as I developed I had a band that was a hybrid style we
called "hard swing". Think East Bay Ray sitting in with Cap'n Beefheart
and Gene Krupa on drums - it was a bit "out there", but very satisfying
to be creating a unique (we felt) musical style. The melody of Argosy
started out in 6/8 swing time for possible use of that band, and the
melody stuck in my head so that years later trying to write some surf
tunes (in 4/4), it seemed to work.
