Re: Stoked!!!!!! Reverb, and the Beach Boys,

supertwangreverb - 19 Aug 2005 10:41:53

I think some of the early Beach Boy's instrumentals would have been
strengthened had they used a little more reverb. Maybe the mindset of
a guitarist circa 1963 was much different regarding the use of a
reverb tank for a surf song like Miserlou. Although, pretty much all
the bands we consider "1st wave" utilized the tank well.
The early Beach Boys may have made a really good instrumental surf
band. Clearly Carl had the influences that most of the surf guitarists
of the day had, he had the gear, and he'd later go on to show good
technical skills, and became a rather proficent song writer. If Al
Jardin stayed out of the picture a little longer David Marks who went
on to play in his own surf band would have been around longer. Who
knows what Carl and David would have done together had they grown up a
bit. Had Brian cracked up a little earlier in life he would have had
the perfect mindset to just play bass :).
Yeah, that's a lot of "what if's" and I'm not saying I would rather
have it this way because, I think one of the most fascinating stories
in American Rock and Roll is the quick development of Brian Wilson's
song writting, and the folowing demise of his mental state... plus
the world would be a lot more empty without those songs.
