I have no problem with "King of the Surf Guitar" song - after all,
it's not Dick singing! It's when he starts singing that things turn
really bad.... A case in point: Summertime Blues. Around the same
time that I got "Tiger's Loose," I also got a CD bootleg copy (on
that Samurai Surf Guitar CD on eBay) of "Rock Out: Live At Ciro's"
from '65 (oh what a terrible, terrible album...). Anyway, some 15
years separates these two live releases - but he performs Summertime
Blues on both of them. Here's the thing: he's only learned the
first half of the first verse, which he repeats three times! That's
it! So, here are the full lyrics by Mr. Cochran:
Summertime Blues
(Eddie Cochran)
I'm gonna raise a fuss,
I'm gonna raise a holler
About a workin' all summer
just to try to earn a dollar
Every time I call my baby,
and ask to get a date
My boss says, "No dice son,
you gotta work late"
Sometimes I wonder
what I'm a gonna do
But there ain't no cure
for the summertime blues
Well my mom and pop told me,
"Son you gotta make some money"
If you want to use the car
To go ridin' next Sunday
Well I didn't go to work,
Told the boss I was sick
"Well you can't use the car
'cause you didn't work a lick"
Sometime I wonder
What I'm a gonnna do
But there ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
I'm gonna take two weeks,
gonna have a fine vacation
I'm gonna take my problems
to the United Nations
Well I called up my congressman
he said, quote:
"I'd like to help you son
but you're too young to vote"
Sometime I wonder
What I'm gonnna do
There ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
Here's Dick's version:
Well I'm gonna raise a fuss
And I'm gonna raise a holler
About a workin' all summer
Just to try to earn a dollar
Sometime I wonder
What I'm gonnna do
There ain't no cure
For the summertime blues
[repeat 3 or 4 times]
Oh, it drives me batty!!! It doesn't even make sense! Can't stand
it. And he does it exactly the same in '81 as he did in '65!! As
it appears that this song was a staple of his live shows for 15+
years, I can't understand why he wouldn't learn three simple verses
in all that time??? (I think he does the same with Bob Dylan's
Blowing In the Wind on Live At Ciro's - just sings the first verse
over and over again - I'm not sure cause I couldn't bear to hear it
more than once. Truly awful.)
Anyway, Dick, Dick, Dick, when will you learn that nobody wants to
hear you sing House of the Rising Sun, Summertime Blues, Blowin' In
the Wind, Fever, Jessie Pearl, or pretty much anything else....
