Re: A Swingin' Affair

ipongrac - 17 Aug 2005 20:32:29

I have the video clip of DD doing Miserlou Twist (w/o the strings).
I got it off American Pop on American Movie Classics, some five or
six years ago, just as Neal mentioned. It sounds like they used the
version of the song that is Surfer's Choice, but just got rid of the
overdubbed strings - everything else about it is exactly the same
(and it's clearly not a live performance).
Though it's awesome to see Dick and ALL of the Deltones in action,
pretty much as you would have seen them in '63, I gotta say it's a
bit underwhelming. The Deltones guys all look really nerdy, and
stand in place, gently swaying from side to side - they look like a
country band from that era! And Dick is hamming it up a bit for the
camera, but not a whole lot, though he does look a LOT cooler than
his band. I guess that was the idea, probably....
Finally, this clip is not from A Swingin' Affair - I think in that
movie Dick was some Elvis-copycat dude, and didn't perform. This
Miserlou is from a movie called Rebel In The Ring - at least that's
what it says on my American Pop clip. The movie is from '63.
Wouldn't it be cool if we could digitize that and put it up on a
website? That and Dick's Ed Sullivan performance, which I also
have. I can't imagine anyone would really care if we put up these
two clips somewhere on the internet space...
