Theres been some discussion about Rat Holic, so I figured Id post a review of
Wipe Out With. Or rather, Ivan told me to. So here goes.
The closest comparison I can think of would be the Royal Fingers / Wild Sammy &
the Royaltones, but with less of an eleki influence and way more
frat-rock/Revels in the mix.
It's not melodic for the most part, but it is way fun. Honkin' sax, great organ,
and the guitarist pulls out some cool Al Nichol licks on a couple tunes.
Actually, the frat influence is about half Revels, half Crossfires. (Not "Out of
Control" / "Inferno" / "Fiberglass Jungle," but "Chunky" / "Pull Top" / etc.)
Theres a few instantly recognizable coversSurf Party, Church Key, Silver
Bullet, Red River Rock and a retitled Shake & Stomp, all of which are done
well. The live tracks are particularly energetic.
Personally, I wouldn't call the album unlistenable by any stretch, but the
production is a bit lacking--there's no arguing that it's definitely lo-fi. If
you can tolerate the mix on the Royaltones Speed Crazy album, though, you
shouldn't have a problem with it.
