Since the 12-string discussion threw up a terrific bargain which
several of us apparently were able to get hold of, as well as a bunch
of recommendations for other guitars, how about baritones?
The obvious (new) choices at the top end of affordable are the Fender
Jag Baritone ($700 most places), and the Jerry Jones Baritone ($900
list). Then there's the Burns Barracuda ($700 from music123... less
in a few places that don't have it in stock)... moving down the price
scale there's the Gretsch Jet Baritone which MusiciansFriend has for
$380 c/w dings and scratches or about $450 fresh and minty. Moving
down further there's the Danelectro Hodad Baritone and the vanilla
Danny baritone which go for around $250-300 on eBay.
Heading downtown is the Jay Turser for around $230...
Are these guitars really useful for (not necessarily trad) surf...
I'd imagine so. I've never played any of them. Some seem to be
designed to be tuned an octave below standard EADGBE tuning, some a
fifth to ADGBEA, and some A fourth to BEADF#B which seems the most
attractive to me since it gives you nice open E A and D strings along
with a low B.
