Re: analog versus digital / drum recording ?

I guess I would fall into the ADD category appropriately. I was using a, WOW!,
look at the
size of that spider! Huh, oh ya, I was using a four-track of some kind as a pre
amp and
runnning that into my computer. I borrowed some mics, one being a Shure SM58
and the
guitar sound was not to my liking at all. I guess its a mic that is meant more
for vocals
and it seemed to favor mostly mid-range frequncy. Lots of extra noises too.
My
neighbor was remodeling his house and my amp was picking up weird varooming
sounds.
Older neighborhood, bad grounding maybe. So I started using the amp simulation
and it
was okay. Getting the guitar volume up in the recordings lead to a more
overdriven sound
than I might have wanted but it was fun. No extra noise either.
The drums were recorded through the four-track as a pre-amp, one mic input but I
split
the signal in two with an adapter, and again I didn't like the sound and in some
cases
there hardly was a sound from the floor tom or cymbals. The other mic was a
Radio Shack
P.O.S. If I wanted to pick up any sound from the cymbals that mic had to be
like an inch
away from the cymbal. The floor tom was way out of reach. I would position the
Shure
mic under the snare near the hi-hat to pick up both. I didn't like the sound of
the snare
mic-ed underneath really, but with some e.q.ing it was ok. It did sound better
above the
snare, not as ringy. Some songs I recorded the drums and cymbals on different
tracks/
takes.
So I'm going to breakdown and buy some new mics and a pre-amp. I might be
limited to
micing the drums with two mics. An SM57 for the the snare, which I could use
for guitars
also, and maybe a condenser mic along with it. Could I use a condenser to focus
on the
toms and cymbals and use the Shure to aim at the snare? Anyone have some drum
recording hints and tips?
Joe
