Re: [SurfGuitar101] Ranking 60's Bands: "The List" goes on

Phil Dirt (dirtkfjc) - 02 Jul 2005 01:41:37

"Sleep Walk" (two words, not one) was Santo and Johnny's biggest hit,
but aside from being instro and a fave among fans, its surf influence
is only tangential.
"Slave Girl" (also issued as "Cairo" with different mastering from the
same take) on the other hand, was the basis for Tommy Nunes' writing of
"Latin'ia," a true surf classic. "Slave Girl" was based on "Malaguena,"
also not surf, but commonly covered by surfbands.
No question Dick Dale had the biggest impact by miles and miles and
miles... just a point of history - being first is not equal to being
most influential or successful.

I don't get what the "Slave
Girl"/"Cairo"/"Maleguena"/"Latin'ia" reference means... did
"Latin'ia" precede or influence "Sleepwalk"?
Or did all those tunes lead up to "surf"? should the
Roubanis version of "Miserlou" be included on that list?
What are you meaning?...I don't get it...
re: the Belairs...yeah, I know they wrote and played Mr.
Moto first, and I'm sure Mr. Moto was a huge influence on
many (maybe even on DD himself)...but, like I said, I was
going out on a limb with that one...I think DD had a bigger
impact on the proto-surf-scene overall. Just an
unsupported bias, on my part, I suppose...and the
never-ending LA/OC rivalry...
re: SENTINALS (!!!)...thanks, I do think we owe the
originators the respect of spellin' their names correctly.
as always, most enlightening post,
