I think the Jazz/Slap guru Stanley Clarke was one of the
first bassists to mess around with tweeters (and
frequency-based crossovers) in bass cabs back in the late
1970s...precisely for the reason you mention: slap and pop
(and "piccolo-bass") upper register clarity.
