Re: [SurfGuitar101] Ranking 60's Bands: "The List" goes on

DP (noetical1) - 01 Jul 2005 21:36:38

i am always down for some pointless activity:
1. Dick Dale "Surfer's Choice": I don't think there would
be "surf music" without Mr. Dale...evryone who was there at
the time went to the Rendevous, everyone owned "Surfer's
Choice"...and knew the words to "Peppermint Man"...the
Reverb Unit, The Showman, The Beast Stratocaster...the
glissando, the fiery-double-picking...the first truly
"surf" LP...Dick originated it all.
2. Challengers "Surf Beat": it seems like everyone I talk
to who was a young person back in 1960-1963 has this album,
and remembers seeing the Challengers play all around SoCal.
3. Chantays"Pipeline": this single (and album) turned surf
into a nationwide phenomenon. Both "Pipeline" and "Wayward
Nile" are eternal and timeless, and in my book both are
"perfect" surf tunes.
4. The Lively Ones "Surf Rider": another album that every
"old-timer" seems to still have in their collection.
Another band that everyone seems to have witnessed live
back in the day.
5.The Ventures: their popularity (and influence) was
immense. Everyone owned a Ventures LP, no matter where they
lived...everyone knows "Walk, Don't Run".
6.The Beach Boys: their instrumental output was meager,
their influence-immense.
7. Santo and Johnny "Sleepwalk": absolute proto-surf, this
song was the de riguer "last song" at countless gigs and
shows.
8. The Belairs: (going out on a limb here) surf was
invented down in OC...the Belairs rode that wave well...
9. The Sentinels, The Centurians, The Tornadoes, the
Pyramids, The Crossfires: five way tie. The frontline foot
soilders of the surf revolution of 1960-1963. Down in the
trenches surf guitar.
10: The Surfaris "Wipe Out" & "Surfer Joe": hugely popular,
almost nationwide exposure.
well, there you have it,
