after a brief web-search, i find I am unable to locate any
accurate history re: the invention of roundwound guitar
strings and when they first appeared on the electric music
scene.
I did find that Thomastik-Infield invented the roundwound
violin string in 1918....and from there roundwounds became
standard issue on many orchestral stringed instruments.
Dick Dale's first album (Surfer's Choice) sounds to me to
be 100% heavy round wound strings...that was 1960, right?
Did Dick Dale invent roundwounds when he invented the JBL
speakers and the Dick Dale Showman transformer?
Some other early performers that sound "roundwound" to me
are:
Buddy Holly: 1957 Stratocaster, right?
Duane Eddy: Guild and Gretsch and Danelectro
Chet Atkins: Gretsch
The Ventures sound "flatwound" during their early years,
but definately sound "roundwound" during their Mosrite
years. (Except for the Ventures Mosrite Bass...it always
sounds flatwound to my ears)
Does anyone have any info to help illuminate this
intriguing string history conversation?
