Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: Fender Bassman

DP (noetical1) - 08 Jun 2005 13:26:54

Back in the olden days (1983-1985), my punk rock buddy,
Dan, played a killer Fender Quad Reverb...all I can
remember was that thing being powerfully loud!
The on-board reverb was sort of tame for surf...so I would
definately still use an outboard reverb unit. The Quad
tended to break up and crunch a bit after about 6-7 on the
volume...and it would really scream at 8-9...but, man at
that volume level almost any Fender would break up and
scream.
I remember really envying Dan's nice loud Fender Quad
sound...my Bassman 50 could barely keep up, volume
wise...but, we were playing small gigs: houses, warehouses,
the Armory Hall and junk like that...
I played punk guitar, but I played with a St. George reverb
tank back then...and some Blue Tube pre-amp
distortion...you know sort of Agent Orange style.
Dan played the Quad with on-board reverb and a
dallas/arbiter fuzz face...punk rock Ramones sort of
stuff...
that was way before the days of decent PA/mic/soundboard
type sound reinforcement which is pretty standard at most
fairly large gigs today.
maybe that's why I have rampant tinitus these days...I'll
have to ask Pete Townshend about that next time I see
him...
huh? eh?...what'd you say?
