Just listened to "Pump It". Didn't do much for me. It was kinda like
Hip Hop Kareoke with a pretty much unaltered "Misirlou" providing the
backing track. I remeber the first time I heard Puff Daddy doing his
thing over Bowie's "Let's Dance" & the Police's "Every Breath You
Take", I was surprised that there was very little done to the backing
track. To me, the creativity in sample based music is experimenting
with the original source. I guess if the song was already a hit (like
Bowie, the Police & and now Dick Dale) people will buy it a second
time. There's no risk involved. There seems to be a very real lack of
creativity/originality in the Top 40.
Oh well, maybe people will buy more surf music...
