Re: Essential Surf Listening

surfbandbill - 26 Oct 2002 16:18:13

I echo many of Jim's recommendations, and also agree that the Nebulas
are a "must" of the new bands out there.
My personal favorite traditional surf band that hasn't yet made the
list is The Revels, and their cd "Intoxica" on Sundazed is a true
classic.
I didn't notice anyone mention The Red Elvises, probably because
they're hard to pidgeonhole as "surf" but are a pretty good band to
get you into the general ideas of the surf genre.
Two 3rd wave bands I've really gotten into are Surf Report and 9th
Wave - both quality bands and good people to boot. Let's also not
forget Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, who gained notoriety as the
band from "Kids in the Hall".
Other people have mentioned, but I want to reinforce, the two bands I
would consider most "essential". Those are Los Straitjackets and The
Blue Hawaiians. These two bands were a big part of the reason I got
into surf in the first place. I'm not saying they're necessarily
better than anyone else mentioned, they just have a major
significance to me.
One last name to drop is Davie Allan and the Arrows. Once again, not
necessarily a surf band, but some top-notch instrumental rock.
Glad to hear surf is still gaining new converts.
