Wow - TooFastJim pretty much nailed it for me too.
Here's some more ideas/additional amplification:
Old School:
Get the Bear Family records Astronauts CD that has "Surfin' With" and
"Competition Coupe" on the same disc. They had a unique sound - 3 guitars
with tons of reverb.
Lively Ones - Get the "Hang Five" best of. Lots of great stuff there.
Original Surfaris - Get the "Bombora" disc from Sundazed.
The Fender IV - Hard to find but worth it.
2nd Wave:
Jon & The Nightriders - Anything is good, I am especially partial to "Raw &
Alive '98" for a kick ass live set.
3rd Wave stuff: I'm with Jim all the way here. If you get any of his
suggestions you'll be smilin'. He's also too modest to throw in his own band
"The Nebulas"...you must own their CD too if you like fast aggressive surf.
Also check out The Bambi Molesters from Croatia. Really awesome stuff.
Standouts here include The Space Cossacks, Slacktone, and Satan's Pilgrims.
For an instro tour-de-force (not completely surf), check out Laika & The
Cosmonauts "Laika Sex Machine" live CD. Great movie soundtracks, moody
instros, hyped up frenetic surf stylin's.
Another 90's band I've been really digging lately is the The Treblemakers
from Canada. I've got both their CD's "Flippin' the Bird With.." and "... vs
The Doomsday Device". Really great stuff. Zak, are you still out there? Are
you guys going to do anything again?
Also both discs from the Volcanos are in regular rotation in my car.
If you like Euro-instro music from the 60's, don't forget the Shadows. I
recommend "The Shadow's are Go!" best of compilation. And The Atlantics, a
60's Australian instro group, also heavily influenced by the Shadows. And I
too second the Link Wray and Treblespankers suggestions.

Mar/Mach IV's cool online store.
If you randomly pick out some CD's from the above two places you won't
regret it.
